Hi Fanny!
Name / age / occupation / location / star sign?
Fanny Gentle, 32, illustrator/artist / Brooklyn, NY / Leo.
Where did you grow up?
Swedish countryside.
How did you get into illustration?
I've always loved drawing but didn't realize that it was possible to do as a job until I came to New York. My boyfriend at the time was very supportive and pushed me to start painting. Then I started making illustrations for Lula magazine and exhibiting in group shows. To do something that I love for work is a dream come true.
Can you describe your work?
Colourful, fun and a bit dark.
What inspires you?
I'm inspired a lot by patterns - I love looking in pattern books and weaving books.
How would you describe your personal style?
I love denim, indigo, lots of patterns and colour. I like wearing clothes for a long time and don't really follow trends.
Has it changed since moving to New York?
Not really. Maybe I'm more solid in my choices now though. When I was younger, I changed my style a lot and wanted to try new things. Now I try to buy things I’ll love for a long time.
Is there anyone whose look you admire?
My husband Bill's [of Backyard Bill], he has such a natural good style, it feels effortless.
What do you love about fashion in New York?
I like laid back style, I think New Yorkers do that best, urban cowboys, worn jeans and shirt, knitted sweater, loads of jewelry and boots. They just know how to look super cool.
Favorite designers?
45 rpm, Kapital, Commes des Garcons, Engineered Garments. It’s about great quality and design and good patterns that are wearable.
Latest purchase?
A pair of tracksuit bottoms from 45 rpm and T-shirt from J Crew liquor store. Bill bought me some amazing socks from Kapital too!
What's on your summer wish list?
White and red striped Current Elliott jeans and a flowery shirt from Engineered Garments.
Have you discovered any exciting new designers lately?
J. Sabatino.
Favorite New York hangout?
I live in Willamsburg where new shops and cafes are popping up all the time. I like going to Bakeri for tea and sandwiches. I’ll stroll by Hickory's to see what new things they’ve got in and dinner at Rye is always delicious.
What's your beauty secret?
Nice simple products. I use an eye pencil from Mac and I'll do red lips on occasion.
Personal soundtrack?
I like Ethiopian jazz.
What do you do on your days off?
Hang out with friends, go to flea markets, life drawing, drink coffee, buy groceries.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
I don't look that far in to the future, I think it's best to take it day by day. Bill and I are expecting out first baby in early May, we are both very excited about it!
